New options to cool hot laptop

Laptop cooling devices generally fall into two categories -- plastic stands with little fans inside and plastic stands without little fans inside (we checked out several examples in our laptop cooling device roundup).

Logitech has managed to hit both categories with its announcement of two new laptop coolers on March 18.

The Logitech Cooling Pad N100 is a gently waving riser, with a fan pointed up through its slotted top. The air intake is from the rear edge, to reduce the chance of blocked airflow, and it can draw power from your laptop via a USB cord

Super-safe laptop battery with three-year guaranteeHP now selling

Considering that we're still getting reports every month or so about laptop batteries catching on fire and exploding, it's not really paranoid to be a little worried about the chemical cells that keep your notebook up and running.

When the crisis broke a few years ago, much research went into battery safety, but nothing ever came of it commercially, and today's batteries are more or less designed the same as they've ever been, just with a little stricter production processes.

Now, finally, one of these "safer" batteries has come to market via HP, which is selling batteries based on technology from Boston Power. The company claims its Sonata cells are "designed to meet and beat any safety standard" available. The HP version of these battery packs, known as the HP Enviro Series, are the first end-user products to use the Sonata technology, a technology which was first demonstrated over two years ago.

Sun Sets on LA Solar Measure

A measure calling for 400 megawatts of solar power on city-owned property in Los Angeles has officially failed. After a final tally, the city clerk’s office announced Thursday evening that voters rejected Measure B by a narrow 1 percent margin, with “yes” votes trailing 2,644 votes behind the “no” votes.

The announcement ends more than two weeks of suspense. Voters went to the polls March 3, but the result of the solar measure remained too close to call as provisional, late and write-in ballots had to be carefully counted.

Travel agencies decline on rival promotion

Shares of online travel companies fell Wednesday after privately held Travelocity followed rivals Priceline.com Inc. and Expedia Inc. in eliminating booking fees for domestic and international flights.

Last week, Expedia Inc. announced a deal that cancels booking fees on flights through May 31. The company was following in the footsteps of Priceline, which has gained market share since removing its air booking fees nearly two years ago.

Ruth Madoff Hangs On To Palm Beach Estate

Ruth Madoff has declared her $9.4 million Palm Beach estate her primary residence, not because she plans on heading south for a little R&R in the wake of her husband finally going to jail, but because the Florida constitution protects people who, like Ruth, apply for and receive "homestead exemptions" to prevent their property from being seized by mean creditors. “The two big drawing cards to Florida were sunshine and affordability,” a local lawyer told Bloomberg. “Now it’s for sunshine and the protection of your primary mansion.”

Some tips of International mothers day

at a glance

> Mother’s Day is May 10, 2009. (Mothering Sunday is March 22, 2009 in the UK and Ireland.)

> In the U.S. Mothers' Day is a holiday celebrated on second Sunday in May.

> First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and Anna Jarvis in 1907.

> Although it wasn't celebrated in the U.S. until 1908, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods that was given honor.

> Later, in the 1600's, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday." It was celebrated during Lent, on the fourth Sunday.

> In the U.S., in 1908 Ana Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death. A memorial service was held there on May 10, 1908 and in Philadelphia the following year where Jarvis moved.

Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. They were successful. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

> Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the U.S
